- This program was inspired by a much simpler version of same written in
- BASIC in the Chicago TRS-80 users group magazine some 12 or 13 years ago. It
- gives your computer something useful to do when you are not at home. At
- work, it makes an interesting conversation starter, and certainly keeps your
- colleagues from messing with your computer while you are away from it.
-
- The idea is that a burglar or intruder in your home or business, or just
- into your space, will notice a flashing warning message on your computer
- screen, hear the sound of a phone being dialed, or a klaxon, and exit at a
- high rate of speed, probably not even stopping to loot or vandalize. Fear of
- capture is a powerful motivator.
-
- To run the program, simply type ALERT at the DOS prompt. No fancy opening
- screens... the warning messages begin flashing immediately. Intruder Alert!
- CALLING POLICE. Every so often sounds simulating a telephone dialing the
- police, or alternately a warbling siren issue from the computer's speaker
- (this feature may be disabled by using the command line argument s, that is
- by typing: alert s, instead of just ALERT at the DOS prompt).
-
- To exit the program, press } (the ] shifted). This may be changed by
- recompiling the source code. Of course, control-c or RESET also exits.
- At program exit, the running time and start time are reported. This is an
- extra security feature so the user knows that no one has stopped, and then
- restarted the program.
-
- The text and background colors as well as the text location are varied about
- at half minute intervals to prevent screen burn-in.
-
- Future versions of the program might make use of the voice synthesizer feat-
- ures of a sound card to produce a *spoken* warning to greater effect than
- simulated sirens and phone dialing. Whether such versions actually see the
- light of day depends on how much support and encouragement is forthcoming
- from users.

- This is Needware. Use the program freely and in good conscience without
- payment of a registration fee. If, however, its use does prevent or limit
- the extent of a burglary, I ask that you send me $7.50 in gratitude, or $5.00
- and a testimonial letter. This is a very small price to pay for saving
- hundreds or even thousands of dollars in household or business property from
- theft or destruction. In any case, your correspondence and suggestions are
- always welcome.
